Some folks wonder why we should be active as people of faith in public life. Lots of good reasons can be listed. There are those who’ve decided to use a form of Christianity as a political weapon, and they may be setting cultural opinions about what Christianity is all about. My convictions are otherwise.

My public witness is founded upon these principles (I think they are embedded in mainstream biblical understandings):

1.       The faith I hold does not allow denigration of other persons

2.       The faith I hold does not presume God is always on the side I’m on

3.       The faith I hold believes all are under the redemptive work of the Spirit of God

These are mutually independent values. More than any specific issue, a faithful witness in public life is best when it reflects these values.
