Some folks wonder why we should be active as people of faith in public life. Lots of good reasons can be listed. There are those who’ve decided to use a form of Christianity as a political weapon, and they may be setting cultural opinions about what Christianity is all about. My convictions are otherwise.
Read the following about religion as a political weapon:
My public witness is founded upon these principles (I think they are embedded in mainstream biblical understandings):
1. The faith I hold does not allow denigration of other persons
2. The faith I hold does not presume God is always on the side I’m on
3. The faith I hold believes all are under the redemptive work of the Spirit of God
These are mutually independent values. More than any specific issue, a faithful witness in public life is best when it reflects these values.
What do you think? How do you see it?
